Picture got frozen while mouse and apps were still running

Hello,

This freeze happens periodically while I'm watching flash videos in Chrome. The picture gets completely frozen, just the mouse pointer may run. I can hear the audio working which means the system keeps downloading the stream.

I cannot easily switch to the console via Ctrl+Alt+F1: it takes a minute before the switch. Form there I created this bug. I tried to kill compiz from the console. Couldn't return back with Ctrl+Alt+F7 so pressed hardware reset.
