I think I'm seeing the same thing. When I switch to "Normal Effects" or "Extra Effects", all windows appear fine, except their missing the border and frame. They can still be moved around / minimised / closed / everything else via the Window List applet or the keyboard but no window border.

I have the same problem on my up to date Gutsy system.

OpenGL vendor string: NVIDIA Corporation
OpenGL renderer string: GeForce 6150/PCI/SSE2/3DNOW!
OpenGL version string: 2.1.0 NVIDIA 96.39

Your problem is probably a missing "AddARGBGLXVisuals" in the Device
section in xorg.conf. That gets added automatically if you use the
restricted-manager but if you enable the driver manually you also have
to add this manually.

Not a bug adding a missing "AddARGBGLXVisuals" in the Device section in xorg.conf solved the problem.

Changed in compiz:

Doesn't solve it for me :(

Attached is my xorg.conf for perusal. It was generated using the "Screens and Graphics" caplet. Any advice?

You don't have AddARGBGLXVisuals in your xorg.conf

I tried installing and then uninstalling the proprietary ATI driver with restricted-manager (compiz doesn't work with those drivers, only with the free ones), but this bug still manifests itself. We're not expecting users to edit their xorg.conf for that, are we?

From my xorg.conf:

 Vendorname "NVIDIA"
 Option "AddARGBVisuals" "True"
 Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
 Option "NoLogo" "True"

and I don't have borders when activate Desktops Effects.

Any ideas?

Answering my own question :)

sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

Menu System -> Preferences -> Advanced Desktop Effects Settings

Make sure Window Decoration is selected (and Desktop Cube and Rotate Cube if you want them)

Now everything should be working :)

AddARGBGLXVisuals is included in my xorg.conf,
and Window Decoration is selected in compiz-settings-manager.

Still no luck getting window borders.

Does anyone know which package provides the Window Decorations as a while ago I installed and uninstalled a number of packages trying to get compiz working.

The window decoration should be gtk-window-decorator, which is included in compiz-gnome.

Any reason why window decorations are not enabled by default? It seems to me like they are one of the more important functions of a WM; without them it is somewhat harder to minimize, close, etc.
