Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

Installed Gutsy Tribe 4 on my Dell Latitude D600 laptop. The live CD seemed to be OK, X settings were normal.

 After the first start the laptop was unusable, because compiz was turned on and rendered only 3/4 of the screen. The gnome panel controls were not visible, so it was unusable.

I suspect that the video card (ATI Mobility Radeon 9000) hasn't got enough RAM to paint all of the screen when desktop effects are used. If I reduce the color depth to 16 bit compiz can be enabled (tried that with feisty).

So either compiz shouldn't be enabled by default for this laptop or the color depth will have to be reduced.

I can confirm this issue in Gutsy Herd 5 running on a D600 as of 11:45PM on September 10th, 2007. The desktop was unusable upon reboot from install. I had to Alt-F2, run "gnome-appearance-manager" and disable all Desktop Effects, and restart Gnome in order to make the computer usable.

What is the output of 'glxinfo -l | grep MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE'? What is your screen resolution?

When I installed Gutsy beta on my D600, I can't get compiz to run (I'm googling the issue)
...but I can answer the previous questions:

amigo@laptop:~$ glxinfo -l | grep MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE
    GL_MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE = 1024

Older D600s have an LCD that can only do 1024x768.
Newer D600s can do 1400x1050.

It can simultaneously drive any two of the three available displays:
 - Built-in LCD
 - Docking station's VGA port
 - Docking station's DVI port

Highest resolution I've personally done is 1600x1200 on both VGA and DVI ports in the dock (built-in LCD must be off).
