Bug Description

This isn't the first time this has happened in 13.10 for me, but it's the first time since I performed a fresh install. I was hoping the previous lockups were caused by an upgrade snaffu since I had upgraded from 13.04 previously but apparently not.

This is as serious a fail as I can imagine (without actually CAUSING hardware damage), so I hope this gets sufficient attention.

I had several windows open last night, including terminal (with X11 forwarding), firefox, reimanna, text editor, etc. The screen was black this morning, but wouldn't wake up. I could see the mouse cursor move, but all else was black. The arrow of the mouse would turn into a 'hand' at certain parts of the screen, as if it was aware that it was hovering over a link in Firefox.

Switching to tty2 I attempted to kill processes until the desktop came back. I killed compiz two times and each time when switching back to tty7 I was able to see graphics on the screen. The first time I saw my unlocked desktop for a brief moment; and the second time it presented me a login box. I entered my pw and the screen went black again. I killed compiz again and immediately afterwards the entire workstation was unresponsive as in I could not switch between tty's anymore so was forced to hard-power off the machine.
