compiz crashed with SIGABRT in raise()

Unity fails to load. This is followed by an apport dialogue telling me that Compiz has "closed unexpectedly".
When attempting to start unity again (which should also restart compiz), it insists that a window manager is already running, and says "unity-panel-service: no process found".
