I seem to be affected by this as well and under similar circumstances (100.14.19 on a 8800gts). I've only recently started using compiz again, but after about a day of normal usage, I have over a gigabyte missing with no process to blame... this didn't happen w/ only metacity.. Removing nvidia module freed a good chunk of memory (200-300 or so megs) w/ passed attempts, but I still had the remainder of the memory missing with it and all services stopped, with the amount of memory listed from ps no where near the amount reported by free (where'd my mem go?). Only solution for me has been frequent rebootings :-(.
