Bug Description

Binary package hint: netbook-launcher

I am using lucid-beta-1, with all updates, on an Acer Aspire One netbook.

The netbook-launcher fonts have become white blocks after the last update. Up until that point they looked great.

The blocks are different sizes, according to the character, but not even close to readable. Each character is just a single white rectangle, approximately the size of the letter.

(note, I have adjusted my default font size to 8pt, but changing this back to 10pt only makes the blocks bigger)

If you disable direct rendering, you are using the 2D launcher, not the 3D, so it seems to come from the 3D one.

I tried on Friday to reinstall my system and had no such issue. Did both of you change the font size? What happens on the live session with latest iso, do you hav the same issue? Can you try to confirm that you ony get that in changing the font size?

Thanks a lot, that will help a lot in debugging such an issue as I can't reproduce it there :/

Changed in netbook-launcher (Ubuntu):
status: New → Incomplete

I tried manually reverting the font size, with no effect.

I cannot use the live session CD as it is a netbook, without a CD drive. :(

I can confirm that the 2d launcher (when selected from GDM) works fine.
FYI - this system was upgraded from Karmic, in the normal way - it is not a
fresh install.

Would a screenshot help?

thanks for the screenshot. I can only see two things to provide more info:
- you can create and boot from an usb disk with the live session (see the usb disk creator in system -> administration). So, no need for a CD drive
- try to switch to the guest session to see if it's a parameter in your home directory.

With one user, the guest session isn't offered (at least not in the shutdown
menu).

Therefore I created a new user, and Nebook Launcher displayed exactly the
same (unreadable). At this point there WAS a guest session in the menu, so
I tried it, but it uses the regular gnome menu, not the netbook launcher, so
it wasn't a great test.

I will try making a bootable USB stick, and report back.

Thank you.

The beta2 USB image appears to work fine when I boot from USB.

Therefore it must be something in the local configuration - but what? It is
apparently NOT user-specific, since I created a new user, who had the same
problem.

Any help would be appreciated

Right, there is something on the system side (maybe font related?). Did you try with different themes and languages?

I must admit I'm a little bit puzzled on that case and don't know where to look for (I tried again some update from karmic to lucid without any issue) :/

No different languages, but I have changed the theme now and then.

The theme is now Ambient, and the font, sans.

However, since a brand new user also experiences the problem, it has
to be something in the system-wide configuration

Are there launcher settings in gconf-editor that could affect this?

If you look at the screenshot, it's almost as if the letters are
there, but super boldfaced, and perhaps cropped at the letter
boundaries.

No other applications appear to be affected however.

Perhaps this is unrelated, but i'll mention it in case...

I have also noticed that you can't add widgets to the default panel In
the 3d launcher. Works fine inthe 2d, but in the 3d no matter where
you right-click, there is never an "add to panel" option.

I'm not concerned about it however - unless it's related.

Brent :)

In fact, it seems to be related to some clutter bad font rendering on some hardware. We can have a try to look at it too, but it seems that clutter doesn't like your driver (and the bug is open for more than a year). I'll still have a look with upstream, bt it seems the 2D launcher (which doesn't use clutter) is the only workaround for you.

No, the not editable panel is on Purpose, you can see it there:

New info,

I tried turning off Desktop Effects, and it DID NOT resolve the issue, nor
did it switch to the 2D launcher session. At least everything on the screen
stayed the same. When I choose the 2D session from GDM, all fonts are
readable, but the icons are much bigger, and the toolbar is just the one
from the standard (non-netbook) desktop. Turning off Desktop Effects from
the 3D launcher did not exhibit any of those.

Also remember, the 3D launcher was working beautifully for me until the day
I submitted this ticket. - and it works from a live USB key.

So I don't think it's un-solvable.

Sure, but the day you submitted the ticket was the day I updated to stable clutter release, which brings a lot of new code lines. The issue is clearly on their side. Care about filling a bug upstream and link them to there? (http://www.clutter-project.org/)

Oh, ok, well that's good to know. What did you update FROM? (is there any
way I can roll that part back for myself?)

I'm not sure how to fill a bug upstream and link there.

I'm guessing it's a version mismatch of some sort, but I can't find a source package for clutter-gtk for lucid.

Okay, I think I have this diagnosed and solved (as much as I can do)

This problem seems to arise from having an old version of
ubuntu-netbook-remix installed, (perhaps even from Jaunty), which doesn't
get removed when the newer version is installed.

The problem seems to stem from one package:
libgl1-mesa-glx

This cannot be removed by itself, but *by installing libgl1-mesa-swx11*
*
*
Installing this package removes the following packages:
libgl1-mesa-glx ubuntu-desktop ubuntu-netbook ubuntu-netbook-remix
so I was worried that my netbook launcher would no longer function - but it
works fine.

After installing this package (which uninstalls the other 4), my fonts in
unr are restored to normal!!

(ps - this also affects gnome-shell, which is also fixed by this package.)

This is a workaround, not a fix. All you've done is disabled 3D rendering.

Ok, sorry, my earlier answer was incomplete.

After posting this I noticed that my graphics were very slow and choppy
(due, I guess, to the lack of 3d rendering) and dug a little further.

It appears that the problem stemmed from the fact that the libgl1-mesa-glx
package was not the official Ubuntu version, but rather a 3rd party version
(mediahacks, I think). I noticed this using the command dpkg -l
libgl1-mesa-glx, which listed the version string as something like like
"7.7.1-ubuntu-mediahacks" (I don't recall exactly)

After installing libgl1-mesa-swx11 (which uninstalled libgl1-mesa-glx), I
listed the contents of /etc/apt/sources.list.d, and removed the mediahacks
repository.

I then did an apt-get update, and re-installed libgl1-mesa-glx, which now
became the one from the official ubuntu repositories.

This fixed the font problem altogether.

I don't recall when or why I installed that repository, but the package
there would appear to be broken or incompatible with the new clutter.
