I should mention that yesterday I did this:

sudo pip install --upgrade pyopenssl

(I did it in response to advice given to solve a Google App Engine problem.)

I don't think it is related because as far as I can see claws-email doesn't use Python.

Anyway, to be on the safe side today I did:

sudo pip uninstll pyopenssl

I also reinstalled both pyopenssl and claws-email. But the problem persists.

I just discovered that this problem affects my gmail account but not my ISP (plus.net) account. So I guess the problem is with gmail rather than with the claws-mail client.

I don't know how to mark this as closed/invalid, but perhaps someone who has more access could do that please?

I received the information from Arnould Nazarian. I have done as he suggested and now have claws email 3.11.1 and it seems to be working correctly now.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This morning my claws mail stopped to work with gmail because of ssl
transaction failure. During the day I understood that my claws mail had
never been updated in ubuntu because the right ppa was not added to my
system:

https://launchpad.net/~claws-mail/+archive/ubuntu/ppa

After I did add this to my system and did launch an update, I now use
version 3.11.1 of claws mail (instead of 3.9.x) and all is working
again (of course somewhen in the past I had allowed less secure
applicatons access to my gmail).
