Bug Description

Binary package hint: chromium-browser

I'm using the Chromium Browser installed from the Software Center, and when I visit YouTube (any video) the video plays fine, but there's no sound at all. Visiting the same videos with Firefox plays sound with no problems.

I'm using Chromium package 5.0.342.9~r43360-0ubuntu2 on lucid. Also, I'm using ALSA to play sound on my Creative X-Fi sound card.

btw, I've just joined the bug report 'upstairs' - perhaps we should discuss it there since it's apparently not Ubuntu-specific.

chromium is adding a huge number of "ALSA plugin [chromium-browser]" entries in the Applications tab of the Sound Preferences app. So many that the window overflows available screen space by a long margin. It does this even with all plugins disabled. It seems to me that something is failing in the way it connects to pulseaudio and it is retrying, but at the same time leaving failed attempts active.

chrome-browser-stable does not display this behavior. A single ALSA plugin [chrome] entry appears in the Sound preferences.

Luis, that sounds like a separate issue. Perhaps you should open another bug for it?
Anyway, I'm inclined to close this bug since I got sound working in Chromium again. I simply went to System -> Sound and switched input.
But it seems that other people are having problems upstream so perhaps we should keep it open...?

Closing now as this report wasn’t investigated timely and is now too old to be meaningful.
Please do not hesitate to report issues occurring with recent releases of chromium-browser, they will hopefully be investigated and acted upon in a more timely manner.
