Bug Description

When I hover the mouse button on top of the Firefox tabs, the tab descriptions are unreadable, black text on black background.

This also happens on some other web sites which pop up a description box, e.g. on portal.azure.com when hovering over your username in the top right corner in the browser.

This probably started happening when Firefox was first compiled against gtk3.
My gtk3 theme is oxygen-gtk.

1) The Kubuntu release is 14.04.4
2) The version of Firefox is 46.0+build5-0ubuntu0.14.04.2
3) I expect to be able to read the tab descriptions
4) The tab descriptions are black text on black background

A workaround for this is to set the gtk 3 theme to something other than oxygen-gtk. I installed Clearlooks-phenix via apt, and selected it via system settings, Appearance, gtk, gtk3 theme. Not pretty, but usable for me anyway

This problem can be fixed by editing file

/usr/share/themes/oxygen-gtk/gtk-3.0/kdeglobals

and changing

BackgroundNormal=24,21,19

to

BackgroundNormal=255,255,255

The new tab description (tooltip?) background will be white.

Looks like there are multiple BackgroundNormal items in the file.
The fix goes to the "[Colors:Tooltip]" section.

This happened to me today In Ubuntu GNOME, confirmed it on 2 different PCs with both 16.04.2 LTS and 17.04. Confirmed across firefox, chrome, chromium, and nautalis. Picture attached for anyone interested in what it looks like.

I'm not sure if this bug is in the correct place as there have been no comments from developers. I filed this bug a year ago.

It is now, I moved it to the correct chromium-browser package.

The chromium bug in comment #7 is https://bugs.chromium.org/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=442111, but from the original bug description it doesn't appear to be the same bug as reported by Aki.

How do you figure they aren't the same bugs between the two reports?

You're correct that the bug in that link is different. However, the identical issue has been replicated by me and several office mates in nautalis, chromium and firefox running independently installed and configured versions of ubuntu gnome 16.04.2. Re add chromium here?

Also, do you want screen shots/video of the problem? A perhaps more detailed description of the problem is that sometimes when you get mouseover text, at least in gnome, there appers to be a large indent before the text blocking all or part of it from being displayed. If you mouse off and mouse back on getting the mouseover text again, the issue temporarily goes away.

Ok sure, but if an identical problem is affecting chrome/chromium, firefox and nautalis, why aren't we assuming that there's one root problem in how text is displayed over the problem instead of removing chromium since it has a unique bug report about this?

Per comment #14, these probably aren't the same problems. The issue in Chrome is not black text on a black background, its corruption of the actual content when switching between tooltips of different line lengths. Even if this is the same bug as the Firefox issue, its already been reported in the underlying Mesa graphics library at https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=90264

Doesn't affect anything for me on Gnome 16.04 or 18.04. Close?
