Bug Description

Based on
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/chromium-browser/+bug/1252253
and
https://answers.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/chromium-browser/+question/239233
I'm filing a bug, not a question.

We're making good progress with the Gaelic localization of Chromium (https://translations.launchpad.net/chromium-browser/translations/+lang/gd) and because I assume this will be a fairly drawn out process, I would like to get the ball rolling now for getting it added to builds for Ubuntu.

Chad, just a headsup, I have finished all the translations for all translatable files (though the importer hasn't imported them all yet).
Let me know if there's anything you need from me.
Cheers

That is incredible work. Thank you, Akerbeltz.

Guys, I don't mean to be a nag but it's been 3 months and I still haven't heard a thing about what's happening with this. Could anyone please enlighten me?

Chromium is not accepting translations from the community any longer, unfortunately.
And it doesn't appear they have translations for Gaelic, either. Their documentation wrt translations doesn't seem to be up-to-date, so I don't know if/how your work could be submitted to the chromium project directly, if you're still interested. Sorry that this didn't get processed timely.

Yes I gathered that while the label on Chrome/Chromium say OpenSource, that's only a veneer.

The thing I find most upsetting about this is that Canonical keeps all these closed/outdated projects on Launchpad (even ignoring the lack of committing work done on Launchpad to upstream projects). There must be many thousands of work hours wasted because people see "oh I can translate X here" and then it turns out that X is no longer active upstream or that the translations aren't being committed etc etc etc. Canonical really must do a big clear-out of such projects.

Agreed, that should have been communicated much earlier. I sympathize with your frustration.
This policy change for chromium is now correctly reflected at https://translations.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/chromium-browser.
