Effects turn webcam image purple

With no effects enabled the image looks fine, when I enable effects I get a purple tint to everything.

On my computers (same version of Ubuntu and Cheese, different hardware), selecting an effect causes this, but when Cheese is closed and then opened again, the effect remains selected at restart and is then displayed correctly. Unselecting the effect causes a red tint.
