I don't have further details, other than this possibly being an artifact of attempting to switch to systemd about a month ago, and an attempt to switch back to upstart about a week ago. While I'm sure that's the problem with a few other packages, today was the first time I saw udev complain during a dist-upgrade.

According to the dpkg terminal log, the first package that failed was cgmanager:

Note that running Ubuntu 14.10 under upstart is *not* supported. There are tons of known problems in 14.10 with systemd still, especially package upgrades for packages which haven't been converted yet.
