2006-05-30 20:05:52 towsonu2003 description I cannot burn or erase mini CDs in Ubuntu. For this, I only tried "Memorex CD-RW 210MB 1x-4x" though. I don't have much money, so I'm not sure if you can duplicate this with other mini CDs. I tried the following programs: k3b, graveman, gnomebaker, nautilus' cd burning utility. None of these could either burn or erase the cd successfully. All the programs report success (for both erasing and burning), but the burned CD is not mountable in Windows nor in Linux: wrong fs (in /var/log/messages) and in dmesg | tail: [4298236.984000] ATAPI device hdc: [4298236.984000] Error: Medium error -- (Sense key=0x03) [4298236.984000] (reserved error code) -- (asc=0x31, ascq=0x00) [4298236.984000] The failed "Read Cd/Dvd Capacity" packet command was: [4298236.984000] "25 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 00 " [4298236.986000] hdc: media error (bad sector): status=0x51 { DriveReady SeekComplete Error } [4298236.986000] hdc: media error (bad sector): error=0x30 { LastFailedSense=0x03 } [4298236.986000] ide: failed opcode was: unknown [4298236.986000] end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector 64 [4298236.986000] isofs_fill_super: bread failed, dev=hdc, iso_blknum=16, block=16 I tried the same CD (that couldnt be mounted above) by burning in two separate Windows machines, both were able to write to it. In both systems, I used the same md5sum checked puppy (as well as dsl) linux iso's. In summary, Linux cannot write, erase, or read (if Linux burned it) these CDs, but Windows was able to erase the disc, write to it, and read what it read. Linux also was able to read data burned in Windows. Relevant forum message (no responses) here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=153349 For any gui output/info (?), please request steps for software other than gnomebaker (it is somehow so borked, I have no idea how to report a bug for it). Oh, almost forgetting: This (linux) system *can* erase and write to regular CDs (650MB and 700MB tried so far). I am changing the description and title of this bug bc. I discovered it doesn't write to a TDK CD_RW High Speed 12x Compatible" rewritable CD either... Initially, I thought it was failing with "Memorex CD-RW 210MB 1x-4x" only. So I guess this is not disc specific but specific to rewritable CDs... On an HP Pavilion zv5120us with an SD-R2512 CD-RW ("ultra speed" CD-RW + DVD) in it, I cannot burn to CDs that are rewritable. Both said it was ok (k3b said it couldn't verify the disc after writing) with same successful result (saying "disc burned successfully). When I eject and try to mount it again, dmesg | tail says: [4296337.306000] ISO 9660 Extensions: Microsoft Joliet Level 3 [4296337.336000] ISO 9660 Extensions: RRIP_1991A [4296433.050000] cdrom: This disc doesn't have any tracks I recognize! I will bump the severity to "Major" bc I can't use the drive with full features. Please revert to "Normal" if that's not ok. PS. I'm using an up-to-date Dapper right now. ------------------------------------------------------------------ BUG REPORT DESCRIPTION BEFORE THE EDIT, DELETE IF NOT NEEDED With BREEZY: I cannot burn or erase mini CDs in Ubuntu.
