Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. While we appreciate the difficulties you are facing, it would appear that the CD image (ISO file) you downloaded could be corrupt. There is an easy way to verify the integrity of the Ubuntu ISO files you download. Could you please visit https://help.ubuntu.com/community/HowToMD5SUM follow the instructions and report back as to whether or not the MD5SUM verified? Thanks in advance.

I had the same problem on the same laptop model (HP G62). To bypass this issue, I disabled radeon at system startup by editing /etc/default/grub and setting the variable GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT in this way:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash radeon.modeset=0"

I hope this can be useful for someone else.

I never had problems during the installation. And for various reasons, I have done both a completely new installation and an upgrade from a previous 10.10 version. The problem was that my system had some random crashes at startup (sometimes I was able to start the system) with a message similar to what you report.
Anyway I think you can pass the option "radeon.modeset=0" during the installation. At start of Live CD, when you choose the language, you can also specify some additional parameters to pass to Linux kernel (It should be by pressing F6, if I remember correctly). The trick is to pass here the parameter specified above, so you should be able to perform a complete installation of the system.

Fabio, I think the right parameter is "radeon.modeset=0" (and not "radeon.nomodeset=0") as reported in https://wiki.ubuntu.com/X/KernelModeSetting . ADR, which parameter have you try?

Hello ADR
can you please start the live session, or better try the newest build from:
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/
and attach here using below button 'Add attachment or patch' the file:
/var/log/syslog
and if you try to install also add
/var/log/installler/partman
I set status as confirmed because reported
http://forum.ubuntu-it.org/index.php?topic=455259.0
With same machine.

Thanks
Fabio

Hello ADR
the I/O error in sr0 (cdrom) means that we have a bad hardware or an incompatibility between the reader and the disk.
Have you got the possibility to boot from a usb key or use another reader '

I have exectly the smae Problem.

HP G62 b08EG
CPU: Intel Core i3 M350
GPU: ATI Mobile Radeon HD 5470 + Intel HD Graphics
RAM: 4GB DDR3
Hard Drive: 320 GB (SATA)

ubuntu 11.04 isn't starting anyway, even with pressing f6 setting everything on off/no
I used the Daily Build of Ubuntu with CD installation and USB-HD but the result is the same.
Then installed ubuntu 10.10 and updated to 11.04 and the same ubuntu is stopping while booting.

For notice: maybe it is the same Problem i have with ubuntu versions smaller then 11.04. I can't install the Ati drivers.
it seems fglrx will is not starting.

Is there a possibility to post the log files?

ADR, maybe you should try "radeon.nomodeset=1" (not "radeon.nomodeset=0")? It should be logically equal to "radeon.modeset=0", but it may be a right solution for you...

Sorry for bad english - I don't use google translate =)

Hello. I have a HP G62 laptop with integrated graphic card. I had problems installing Ubuntu from live-cd too. (Ubuntu freezed to logo.) Managed to install Ubuntu from non graphic alternate install. When I tried to boot the fresh Ubuntu installation it freezed to Ubuntu logo again. I luckily pressed the wlan button from keyboard ON=white (not OFF=red). Then Ubuntu booted nice.

Before the locked driver for wlan download (and install) I pressed wlan button off and Ubuntu freezed. Then I booted again and downloaded the driver for wlan and after that Ubuntu wont freeze if wlan is set off from keyboard (off=red), not in boot or while running.

Later I tried with Lubuntu install from USB-stick too, same problem happened with that too. (If wlan is OFF, Ubuntu/Lubuntu does not boot or run)

I have a HP Pavilion DV6, and I have the same problem occasionally. I think it happens maybe 1 in 30 boots, and sometimes the machine will freeze so nothing can be done - sometimes I am able to press Alt-F2 and see the error from the screenshot.
