Bug Description

in the screen where you choose the keyboard layout, espresso does not select the current layout (detected from the running system)

it should be done :)
cheers
fabrizio

Note: the original reporter indicated the bug was in package 'espresso'; however, that package was not published in Ubuntu.

What keyboard layout did you select at the CD boot menu? Did you change the keyboard layout in some other way after the live CD started up?

Confirmed in Dapper Beta 2. I chose Swiss German in the boot menu and it correctly set up xorg.conf with "ch" and "de". However in ubiquity, the default was American.

Setting back to Needs Info because I'd also like to know what the original reporter's keyboard setup was.

casper preseeds debian-installer/keymap (which is needed by xorg), but kbd-chooser wants to be preseeded with kbd-chooser/method instead. I'll send Tollef a fix in a bit.

Hmm. Even after this casper fix, ubiquity defaults to the keymap matching the selected language, not the one selected in gfxboot. This may be due to a bug elsewhere, but I'd better keep it open on ubiquity just in case.

  * Pass debian-installer/locale to /root's debconf db (closes: Malone

  * Identify ourselves as casper when communicating with debconf.
  * Factor out preseeding code into casper-preseed; this knows that it only
needs to register a question if it fails to set it, which saves memory
by avoiding debconf having to rewrite templates.dat.
  * Preseed kbd-chooser/method as well as debian-installer/keymap, so that
kbd-chooser run from ubiquity picks up the selected keyboard (closes:

  * Use new dpkg-reconfigure --no-reload option (debconf 1.4.72ubuntu6) to

ubiquity's kbd-chooser component integration clobbers preseeding. I'll fix this after the Dapper release; it's unfortunately too late now.

I'm experiencing the following difference between 6.06 and 6.10 edgy beta when installing with ubiquity:

Selecting Greek Language in Ubiquity Edgy Beta installer at the 1st installation step, should also pre-select by default the Greek keyboard layout option at the 2nd installation step. This was the behaviour at 6.06 and it provides better support as it adds the "XkbLayout" "us,gr" in xorg.conf (lots of users simply do click next next next, so these 2 options are better to be tied together. Now in Edgy Beta they simply select Greek language and forget to select Greek as the keyboard layout as well, resulting in an installed system that lacks keyboard switching support).

I'm not selecting any keymap from the gfxboot, I just start casper in order to run ubiquity for installing the distro.
