Bug Description

Binary package hint: canonical-census

There doesn't seem to be any package that provides /var/lib/ubuntu_dist_channel, but it simply exits if it doesn't exist. So, nothing happens. Tested on Ubuntu 10.04.

I guess this is a non-issue as census is targeted at OEM installations (which will most likely contain the mentioned file). As far as I know at least.

You can create this file yourself. But you need to know that it should contain.
Anybody can copy the contents of this file? I think it's a good idea to say "I am alive".

For now census is for OEM installations of Ubuntu. If Canonical wants to acquire information from manual installations, they will be create census for them.

But this file isn't created neither on OEM installation. How package canonical-census knows how it is installed on OEM system? So, Canonical can be make example of this file.
