Caja grays out in large directories

Caja grays out for long stretches while trying to list a large number of items, particularly in network shares. If I force quit Caja sometimes the desktop re-spawns, but sometimes it fails to. File transfers between Samba shares also hang for about 30 seconds or so---the actual data transfer is very fast, but the progress box hangs.

This applies to UM 18.04, but also to 17.04 and 17.1. The problem seems to be getting worse, not better.

Can confirm this still happens in UM 20.04. And the folder doesn't have to be particularly large, and often happens when I copy files over to a portable HDD. The transfer is always successful, but all Caja windows hang for at least 30 secs.
