system perl should be set upon activating xdg-screensaver (which is perl script).

Basically, if alternative perls are installed via other package managers like homebrew, xdg-screensaver will fail since it can't find the correct modules. Before invoking xdg-screensaver, which is perl script, you should specify to use system perl, which was installed via same package manager as caffeine (apt).
