Bug Description

With BumbleBee installed, I've tried in both Ubuntu 13.04 and 13.10, but I can never get the mini displayport to work at all. It is recognized in a default 12.04 and 13.10 live environment.

WORKAROUND: This does work in Precise without BumbleBee installed.

Would it be possible for you to test the latest upstream kernel? Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Please test the latest v3.12 kernel[0].

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.
Once testing of the upstream kernel is complete, please mark this bug as "Confirmed".

Thanks in advance.

Kernel tested, and nothing has changed. Note that the second link you provided is the 3.13 kernel for Trusty.

Since this issue involves specific hardware that I own, I'm willing to do testing on this issue, if more experienced people can provide me with the tools to test.

The Mini DisplayPort functions in Precise, although the cursor leaves ugly trails on the external screen.

Soon I will try Precise with Bumblebee installed, to see if Bumblebee is causing the issue.

returningshadow, in your Precise test noted in https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/1260741/comments/27 did you have nvidia card disabled in BIOS or vice versa?

As well, if the nvidia card was enabled, were you using the nvidia proprietary drivers or nouveau, and was the Intel card disabled?

My Nvidia card is always enabled in BIOS.

I was running Ubuntu from a flash drive, so it was as vanilla as Ubuntu could possibly be. I assume Ubuntu does not come with proprietary drivers.

I just tried installing bumblebee to the flash drive for testing, but upon reboot, it was all gone. Is there a way to create a consistent flash drive install of Ubuntu 12.04?

returningshadow, thank you for providing the requested information. In your initial reporting of this bug, your lspci notes:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GF108M [NVS 5400M] [10de:0def] (rev ff) (prog-if ff)
 !!! Unknown header type 7f

Did you have Bumblebee installed in Saucy? If so, if you uninstall it in Saucy, is your Mini DisplayPort recognized?

I am unable to test this, as when I remove bumblebee, it prevents the desktop from loading on boot.

I am going to create a 13.10 LiveUSB to test this.

returningshadow (reidwicks) wrote :

I am currently posting from the LiveUSB. The Mini DisplayPort is functioning, although with some strange artifacts, and occassionally a very noticeable amount of lag. The port is not recognised as an audio device, so all audio must come from the computer itself.

The issue must be coming from bumblebee. Shall I create a bug report for bumblebee?

returningshadow, this report could always be converted from linux (Ubuntu) -> bumblebee (Ubuntu) if necessary. Despite this, could you please confirm this issue exists with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/ . If the issue remains, could you please just make a comment to this?

I don't see why it wouldn't. The issue isn't with Ubuntu, it is with bumblebee. I will change this bug to bumblebee now.
