phantasia: crashes with buffer overflow on 14.04

phantasia on an up to date 14.04 crashes with an buffer overflow. to reproduce:

1. start "phantasia"
2. press "N" (create new character)
3. press "1" (choose mage, could be different, though)
4. press "1" (confirm random skillset)
5. enter "name" (just any name will work"
6. enter "pw" (just any password <= characters will work)

result: application crashes with core dumped.

I tried various inputs, all trigger the buffer overflow. Excerpt:
