I was able to do the following:

Audio CD
- Load
- Browse
- Play
- Rip in Sound Juicer
- Copy
- Eject

DVD
- Load
- Browse
- Play
- Rip to ISO with Brasero
- Encode ISO to MP4
- Eject

Seems to be everything working for me.

I have:

Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx 2.6.32-22-generic #36-Ubuntu on x64
Pioneer DVR-218l SATA DVD Writer

I tried several CDs and all worked.
