Brasero does not detect the burner even with the newest 2.6.31-4-generic kernel on 64-bit Ubuntu Karmic.
I did manage to burn a disc sucessfully with Gnomebaker - I do not know if there is a verify option
Also burn a disc with k3b - it seems to finish sucessfully but gives an error on verification - track 1 differs? if I remember correctly.

i upgraded to the new brasero 2.27.5-0ubuntu1 today but it did not resolve the problem. Brasero still does not detect any media in the drive, even though it says Blank DVD Disc on the desktop.

There was a new release that fixes this issue, but is not yet in the Karmic repos. We should verify this bug is fixed after 2.27.90 is distributed to all testers..

I am still unable to burn on blank DVD R/RW using gnomebaker, brasero, etc.. only burn to image is possible..

@Michal, you can follow the link in comment #4 to see when the bug is fixed in brasero.
After it is fixed there, Ubuntu will pull the latest version as an update and everyone will be happy.

Actually, that bug has been closed and marked as a duplicate of:

I also experience this when trying to burn a DVD in karmic. I am able to burn a DVD in Jaunty without any issues. The drive's LED indicator flashes between amber and green which shows that there is an error. I've attached a snapshot of Brasero trying to burn a DVD; as you can see the estimated time for burn is 1570:06:03, and that number keeps growing, the DVD does not burn at all.

I am having this bug as well but I don't think it is limited to brasero. When I insert a blank cd into the drive it will not be recognized by any program. When I go to Places>Computer>CDRW/DVDRW it says there is no media in the drive. I have tried 3 different brands of blank cd and dvd all with the same outcome. Polling is enabled and fstab recognizes the drive. The drive reads media with data on it just fine. The drive was working perfectly until yesterday. Please help this is quite frustrating.

So, this bug is related to Linux kernel or some desktop libraries/daemons, Ubuntu please reassign this bug to the right package instead of Brasero

1. If I insert a DVD or CD I am enabled to burn them but only when they are inserted i can see that option...

I still can only burn one disk, Brasero will ask to make a second copy but then not recognize a disk has been inserted. Then when I actually do get it to work it won't finalize properly. For example if I want to make 2 copies of a bootable ISO: The first will burn, then Brasero won't see the new disk inserted. When I quit and just reburn a copy, it won't finalize properly. I can see the files but it fails to boot. Rebooting will solve the first finalize but then back to the same problem.

I can burn only one cd / dvd. Then Brasero refuses to detect any new media.
For example i was trying to do a pair of copies of the Ubuntu 9.10 iso. First burn went fine, but any other tries to burn it failed.

Off-topic, but I think the command
growisofs -dvd-compat -Z /dev/sr0=image.iso
should have 2 dashes before dvd-compat. That is probably the invalid argument error.

I've just upgraded to 2.28.2 in a relatively fresh install of Karmic--still the same problem. Brasero performs perfectly on video dvds but won't recognize a recordable dvd for the purpose of burning a copied data dvd (in this case Ubuntu 9.10 Live CD).

I get the same error messages in the system logs (Karmic). Seems to be a kernel issue. Only seems to happen with blank discs. I had no problems writing a DVD+RW with data already on it (initially burned with previous versions of Ubuntu). But when I tried to burn a DVD+R earlier this evening the burner went bananas. That's when I started to inspect the logs and it got me here :-)

In my case it seems to be related to udev. If I stop it I can burn CDs successfully with brasero.

I have been experiencing the same issue has javabean. This is not a brasero problem since I have been getting this with growisofs (is there another bug opened for this specific issue). I tried stopping udev for burning and it worked: No more kernel traces when inserting disk or when the write failed (well it doen't fail with udev stopped).

Add me to the list of folks who have trashed media trying up-to-date versions of both Brasero and GnomeBaker on Ubuntu 9.10. I have a new low-end HP desktop with a 16x DVD-/+RW drive, and I am using DVD-R media. I am just trying to burn 1 large (4GB) file to a data DVD. I have tried 16x and 4x. The message I get from both apps is:

Contrary to what growisofs says, the disc is _NOT_ closed. It is now a coaster. All the ^C's are ignored, of course, and the DVD-RW drive is locked into what sounds like an endless loop. The drive will not open, and I have to reboot to regain control of it.

The drive is an:

Can't make any back-ups. This is extremely frustrating, the ability to burn a CD / DVD is kind of a critical operation for a desktop machine.

Happens with Brasero, XFBurn and any other program, definitely appears to be a kernel issue.

I updated the kernel to 2.6.32.2 using Ubuntu (mainline) Generic .deb files here:

I am now able to successfully write to DVD and CD using Brasero, Gnomebaker or XFBurn.

I followed Phil's lead and tried the mainline generic packages at

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v2.6.32.2/

as well. I am happy to report that I can write DVD's again with wodim and Brasero. There are still some strange things occuring, though: before the write, the writer acts funny, making the same cycle of 'spin/move laser/spin again' noises as it did before when it refused to write at all. After the write has completed, the noise cycle begins again until I manually eject the disc. Despite this, the disc is written correctly, as far as Linux or I can tell. (mounts, can read files from it, can umount and eject).

95% solved. Let's keep this going. :d

I was quite disappointed to have vested the time getting X running on the 2.6.33 kernel (nVidia 195.30 required patching to be compatible with 2.6.33-rc1; wish I'd have known that the first time) to have the exact same results. I never did try burning with an older kernel (older Kubuntu install) as I just started burning with the laptop instead, which interestingly burns just fine with the same 2.6.31 kernels from the repo's that fail with the desktop. Laptop also runs Karmic.

I will try with the 2.6.32.2 kernel that people have reportedly had success with. Failing that, I'll try the 2.6.33 kernel again (rc2 this time) and 2.6.29. I'll report my findings in within the next few days.

I am glad to see that this bug has some attention.

I've had the same problem and after not getting anywhere with zanghi's link I connected an old IDE writer in place of my current SATA writer and everything seems to be fine. So at least on my machine the problem is to do with SATA interface. Sorry if I'm repeating a known fact.

I can confirm that on Ubuntu 9.10 amd64 with the kernel downloaded from here:

my SATA drive still refuses to work properly. The burnung fails just a few seconds after it has started. On Windows, it burns without any problems.
I am attaching the Nero Linux burn log.
I also would like to mention that my SATA controller is set to AHCI mode in BIOS. I would like to remain in AHCI, as I also have a SATA hard drive on the same SATA controller and I would really like to use AHCI features like S.M.A.R.T. and so on which, as far as I know, are not available when I set the SATA controller to so-called "IDE" mode.

As in Windows it burns flawlessly, I assume that the problem is the current linux kernel which does not support burning on SATA drives in AHCI mode.

I've read this thread. Now have done:

Still cannot burn - correctly md5summed - CentOS-5.4-i386-bin-1of6.iso. Neither via this standard procedure: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BurningIsoHowto#Ubuntu, nor from within brasero or gnomebaker.

This is on 2.6.31-20-generic, Ubuntu 9.10 - the Karmic Koala; the hardware is ok for sure. (Brasero 2.28.2, as well as gnomebaker 0.6.4 can't burn the above .iso for me.)

From my perspective of almost the layman - the bug is still here.

I have a similar issue too. Brasero worked fine this morning to burn an ISO file to a blank DVD. This afternoon I have tried to do the same process to burn a different ISO file and my laptop is no longer recognising media in the drive. The media is the same type of Verbatim 4.7gb blank disk. This is very frustrating as it was working fine until this morning. I have also tried with GnomeBaker but I get the same issue. Basically the disk is not being mounted and the DVD link does not appear on the desktop. I have tried the detect media option in the Disk Utility software but it does not do anything. I did notice that after I burnt the successful disk this morning even after I had removed the disk the desktop DVD link stayed behind although what this indicates I have no idea. Any thoughts on this being resolved with the stable Lucid release at the end of the month? I did try the 2.6.32.2 upgrade as suggested above but it has made no difference.

A bit more digging through myriad similar issues I found this bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/eject/+bug/412527 which had a suggestion to change the SCSI setting in the BIOS. I did this and my system is now back recognising blank media. As mentioned by someone else in the thread - not sure if this has any other side-effects but at present all is working ok and I can now burn DVDs once again.

I can't change the AHCI settting in my BIOS, it's a Dell Vostro laptop. Unless there's a kernel arg to do this...

However, brasero will not copy disk and returns "missing lib files."
Have removed and re-installed brasero with no success but the error message simply says
"load missing files manually". No reference to which files.
Should I load "brasero python files" ?

I could not get Brasero to work either. It kept saying "unknown fault". Then it would eject the disk. After many attempts, I replaced the drive. It was older, but known to be good. No help.

On advice from the forum, I tried Xfburn. Sometimes it says it cant unmount the media, sometimes it says the drive is empty, sometimes it says the drive is in use, or "Cant grab the drive". I did get it to burn once, but the disk was unreadable in my DVD player.

The strange thing is that the problem did not start right after the upgrade to 10.04. I made a 10.04 install disk the day before the problem started. Come to think of it, just after the upgrade, it started telling me that it could not eject the disk and had to be ejected manually. It did this for about a week, then it refused to burn.

I dont know how much of this is relevant so I am reporting all the weird stuff it did. I have been using Brasero since 7.04. In my opinion, it is the cleanest, simplest software out there that can still do almost anything. I hope it can be fixed.

I've also run into this problem. I first experienced it a few days ago and it magically fixed itself. I burned about 3 or 4 DVDs since Wednesday night when it just started working on its own until now, where I'm having the same problem again and it's not going away.

I'm going to try the 2.6.32 kernel mentioned in post #58 and #63.

a Brasero-bug as Nautilus reports that the empty CD has no free space as well. It is logical that Brasero

We have confirmed working CD drivers in Maverick with brasero therefore it is most likely that any issues remaining are hardware specific, ie. specific to the hardware combinations. Why are we now Declined for Karmic? Why are do you conclude that "any issues remaining are hardware specific" rather than confirmed CD drivers are hardware specific?

We closed this particular bug, because it is impossible to debug the issue with so many comments from so many user with varying hardware configurations...especially when some post saying they have no problem. We aren't ignoring the issue (it's quite the opposite), we'd prefer you (and anyone else with this problem) to open a new bug following Andy's guidance in comment #92 for _your_ specific issue, so that we can track them all here...but resolve them faster, by being able to focus on each issue separately. Now we could get lucky, fix one or two issues, and the others are resolved to, but there's no way we can know that until we look at each case individually....as there could be any number of things causing this bug, from cd drive manufacturer type, connection type, motherboard, bios, etc.

Thank you, Robbie. That is informative. Please do not abandon those of us using Karmic who have been seeking resolution of this problem for a year. I thought that regression testing between Jaunty and Karmic might be just as likely to reveal the source as would a fresh look at Maverick. (For what it's worth, x86_64 looked like a way to start narrowing it down.)

Re:hardware. The DVD burner is identified on the working side of my dual-boot system as HL-DT-ST DVD-RAM GH40L SCSI CdRomDevice, using MS Driver Version 6.1.7600.16385.

File system: I am just an amateur, but I thought it might be pertinent that my root file system is set up with dm-crypt, lvm2, ext4.

I filed my specific case in Bug #602862, but is was set a duplicate of this bug. It is not clear what I have to do in particular.

My cd-burner is HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE-8320B

I did a clean install of ubuntu 10.4 on a dell Inspiron 5150 (cd/dvd-drive = CDRW/DVD SBW-242).

I can burn a blank cd by means of Brasero (brasero indicates the correct number of bytes available). If one
clicks on the desktop-icon (mounted device) -> properties : 0 bytes used, 0 bytes free ==> wrong number
of free bytes is indicated).

However if I insert a blank DVD, there is some activity on the drive, but no errors are generated (dmeg, debug , ...)
nor a mounted-icon is generated. Brasero can't burn the data (no media)

On my laptop, I can use Brasero, although at inserting a blank cd-rom, the warnings underneath are generated. So it possible that a lot of people don't notice this problem-report?

I can also confirm that un-installing Brasero and installing GnomeBaker makes it possible to burn DVDs anyway, as suggested here: http://edtake.wordpress.com/2010/05/14/ubuntu-lucid-lynx-dvd-writer-not-detected/

mp, I understand the frustration, but this bug is pervasive across Linux, i.e. affects multiple distros and is not something we can easily fix. Just do a google search of "[sr1] Sense Key : Illegal Request [current]" or "[sr1] Add. Sense: Logical block address out of range" and you'll see. It seems that it may even be firmware related, in which case we can't fix it. Couple of questions:

1) Can you test this with Maverick? I'm asking because I'm running maverick on my Thinkpad X301 with a USB connected CD/DVD burner and I don't have this error.

2) Are you using a new, never written to DVD-RW or one that you erased? I'm asking because that might indicate where we should investigate.

I'd love to be able to test this with Maverick, but I'm getting this on the one machine I have that needs to be stable, so I won't be able to do that for a little bit, unless I can run Maverick off a stick, which I'll look into.

Now that I have removed Brasero I can burn DVDs and play DVDs.

I continue to have that bug on Kubuntu Lucid 10.04 x86 64 ( now with update 10.04.1) but i never Brasero and i get at any boot system a many long log with that failure to read the disc:

when I ran brasero from terminal there was this warning:
GVFS-RemoteVolumeMonitor-WARNING **: cannot open directory /usr/share/gvfs/remote-volume-monitors: Error opening directory '/usr/share/gvfs/remote-volume-monitors': No such file or directory

Brasero saw the blank cd after installing gvfs-backends. I also removed existing libbrasero libraries by doing "sudo apt-get remove brasero libbrasero-media0" but maybe it is not needed.

1. it still happens with Maverick, and regressed sometimes during Lucid development for me (I've filed bug 613214)
2. I have tried different media, currently a blank DVD again.

It may be related to Linux, and not Ubuntu only, but nonetheless it has regressed and is not firmware related - my hardware has not changed for years.

Brasero is still recognizing blank DVD for me in Maverick (as it did in Lucid). As always, I'm willing to post any pertinent output but will need to be instructed as to exactly how to do so.

After a long hiatus from investigating bugs, I had a bright idea, and the only one I hadn't tried: pop out the burner and /clean the lens/.

Lo and behold, my drive is now fully functional. Brasero burns, DVD's are recognized again, and I'm happy.

I have a "HL-DT-ST GT10N" DVD+-RW (Dell Vostro 1520 embeded DVD drive) with "A105" firmware.
It plays CD. It plays some of DVDs but it has the same problem mentioned above with lots of DVDs!
It gives:
