Brasero fails to write audio CD

Running Dell's version of Ubuntu Hardy with kernel 2.6.24-24-lpia and ume-belmont on an Inspiron Mini, attempting to burn audio CD using Brasero 0.7.1-3ubuntu1. Optical drive is i/o Magic IDV8P USB drive. Disc comes out a coaster with a tiny band burned near the center.

This is yet another "Could not write lead-in" bug report. Not sure if the problem is in Brasero or Wodim. Debug log is attached.

Thanks for the report, may you please try to install cdrecord, remove wodim and try again, it seems it's that which is causing issues now, may you also try to reproduce the same with jaunty? thanks in advance.

Can you point me to an appropriate repository for cdrecord? It doesn't seem to be in the Dell repos. I'll also need help adding that repository for apt-get/Synaptic.

I've tried installing Jaunty UNR, but there were serious update-related bugs that caused the Gnome panel to unload; it also ran much more sluggishly than Dellbuntu Hardy. I'll try reproducing the CD burn error using the Jaunty UNR Live USB.

I've installed cdrecord following the instructions here:

Still not working. Brasero still fails to burn an audio CD, but now the disc is ejected untouched after the unsuccessful burn. At least I'm not burning coasters anymore.

Tried it in Jaunty UNR run from the Live USB. Similar result, but different.

I hope the data in the log files help the developers fix Wodim...seems to have had multiple problems since Feisty or earlier.

The UNR Live USB isn't casper-rw enabled. Since changes aren't persistent, I'm reluctant to go through the trouble of installing cdrecord on the thumb drive.

I am having a problem with burning an audio cd (WAV). I try to make a copy of an audio CD and when its 99% finished it ejects the cd then loads it again automatically, brasero restarts a second instance of the program on the desktop again but never finishes the cd. Later the cd isnt recognized by the compu and doesnt play in a cd player, it burned something because the cd isnt blank but no data appears. I am burning coasters. During the reading and buring process is says its making a temporary image file but for 805?mib..the audio cd is 700mb?? I am running ubuntu jaunty. Also minor detail...the report a problem window says "apport" instead of "report"

That is correct - the bug report package is named apport. I'm not sure if it was intentionally named after a phenomenon commonly associated with paranormal activity; one could argue that bugs are not outside of the norm in Ubuntu.

I guess I'll have to try another USB burner and see if that cooperates any better...could be an incompatibility between my netbook's USB hub controller and the GSA-T40N...which would be odd, considering this optical device is allegedly "designed for Dell".

Update: I just tried my GSA-T40N with a beige box that has a basic generic Hardy installation, and the device wasn't even recognized by the USB hub controller. So either the drive is poorly designed, or it is damaged.

Tried the GSA-T40N on a couple other boxes with no luck; ended up buying a different USB writer from a different company. (Way past return/exchange date for the Dell purchase.) I've come to the conclusion that this particular unit was damaged, so I guess we can go ahead and mark this bug report as invalid or whatever.
