Bug Description

Binary package hint: brasero

I'm using brasero 2.26.0 on jaunty, which seems to have added a "cd / dvd creator" menu entry:

brasero (2.26.0-0ubuntu1) jaunty; urgency=low

  * New upstream release (LP: #343468)
    - Fixed #573790 - Make brasero nautilus extension show in system
       menu.
    - Renamed nautilus extension to CD/DVD Creator to avoid any
      regression.

I guess this fix means to replicate in jaunty the previous experience in intrepid, where you had a "places → CD/DVD creator" launcher. But by placing it in "apps → system tools → CD/DVD creator" we not only fail to do so, but also clutter the menus.

Please move the menu entry back to places.

that change comes from upstream : http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=573790 isn't an Ubuntu decision.

I'm quoting my message in the thread you pointed me to:

"I really don't understand this change:

-Almost all items under the places menu (save for "search" and "recent files"
open nautilus windows.
-All items under the apps menu open their own apps, not nautilus windows. There
already is a menu entry that opens a burning app, that is brasero.

How does it make more sense to place a menu entry which opens a nautilus window
under apps, and not places? Moreover, what use is it to clutter the apps menu
with two burning apps: brasero and NCB?

As I see it the CD/DVD creator is a place, not an app. And as such, it should
go under the places menu".

Ubuntu has sometimes moved apps from their original upstream locations, in order not to show the "system tools" menu. Couldn't we do the same this time, when it makes so much sense?

correct, i don't think it makes too much sense to keep that in system tools, people is used to the places->burn, moving it from there could only makes things harder.

So, is ubuntu going to move it back to places or should I contact upstream's mailing list? If so, it's not very likely that this will be fixed for jaunty.

David, I don't think upstream is going to change that for GNOME 2.26.1, better to track this on Ubuntu for now so it could be likely to be fixed for Jaunty.

Hi Rick,

What's the rationale for moving it to Accessories? Since CD/DVD creator opens a Nautilus window, I would say it's definitely a place.

The user doesn't really consider creating a CD/DVD a place, it is something they do. I know it technically opens a nautilus window to burn:///, but the average user doesn't want to know that.

He does know that it does the same as double-clicking the disc icon on their desktops, though. Same as double-clicking a folder, or removable device. It's not something they *have to* learn and might prefer to ignore, it's something that they are going to encounter when they interact with their desktop. Telling them the CD creator is NOT a place but an app is only going to confuse them in the long run, IMO.

There is a clear difference between app (brasero) and place (CD creator), please let's make it clear to the user. Also, as Pedro said, people are used to places → burn.

Hi,

Since this bug specifically targets the cd creator not being in the Places menu and the latest upload does not fix that, please do not mark it as fixed. If in spite of the given arguments you are still decided to keep it in the Accessories menu, please mark the bug as wontfix instead.
