Knife and Border Selection tools aren't working properly

I'm using Ubuntu Lucid Lynx 10.04 and the current version of blender from the repositories (2.49.2~dfsg-1ubuntu1)
I'm modelling as always, and i expected the selection and the knifes to respond immediately after the commands. Instead of this
both border selection tool (hot-key B) and the Knifes tools (hot-key K in edit mode) makes de interface of blender to run very slowly, and I have experienced the crash of this software several times since I've upgrade from Intrepid to Lucid in this week.

There is no support on outdated/deprecated version which has reached EOL
