If you open up a terminal window and run blender from there (I believe the command is just 'blender') do you get a more descriptive error message you can add to this bug report?

Hi,

Ubunt 10.10 64bit

Blender 2.49.2~dfsg-2ubuntu2

python 2.6.6

I got a similar problem.

When i try to start the application a window filed with grey starts up, with a pink box, near the cursor, when i move the cursor the window disapears.

I reinstalled Blender, but it still happens.

if i type 'blender' in the terminal this happens

Compiled with Python version 2.6.6.

Without the original bug reporter giving feed back I can't be sure if the original bug is the same as Michael Tale's.
However Michael Tales bug has been filed by someone else as #612768

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=608032 is something similar, maybe it should be marked as the debian equivalent of this bug.
