Bug Description

Binary package hint: beryl

hi,

I found a strange problem that sometimes when I minimized and maximized a window by click its icon on GNOME taskbar, it will turn black. I occasionally found a "temporarily" solution that by clicking the "Show Desktop" button on the bottom-left of GNOME few times. But I think that is not a permanent idea. Can anyone figure out what is the reason of that problem?

Enclosed is the snapshot of my problem.

My spec:
nVidia nForce 2 integrated GeForce MX 440 graphic card.
Ubuntu Feisty beta.
beryl 0.2 running on AIGLX.

Thanks.

Here is the snapshot.

I also have the window blacking out problem with beryl installed. Could it be a problem with Nvidia cards? I have a GeForce 6150. Also, I'm operating in KDE and not Gnome..... My blackouts often happen when opening something new, minimizing and maximizing, and having several things open at once. All programs are fair game, though Firefox seems to be the favorite application to suffer.

I discovered that shrinking the window size sometimes fixes the problem too... but that's only sometimes.

I would think I don't have enough RAM installed, but I have 2 GIGS!!! Shouldn't that be enough? I think I have sufficient video memory, too, but I suppose the GeForce 6150 is kinda skimpy in that area... dunno....

I had the same problem for months with a GeForce 6100 embedded on a K8N-VM motherboard until I change shared memory in BIOS settings.
It was stupidly restricted to 64Mb. Updating to 128 Mb made me happy ;-)

This sounds like a duplicate of Bug #96473 ...

well, I don't think they are the same problem. the Bug # 96473 happens when they had opened 5 or 6 windows. But my problem occurs no matter how many windows are opened.

I heard from some guys and they said I should downgrade my Beryl version to 0.2.0, according to Wiki of Beryl Project. Here is the link.
http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/Install_Beryl_on_Ubuntu_Feisty_with_XGL
It says the beryl and XGL provided by Ubuntu Feisty conflict if beryl version is 0.2.0.

It seems what they said is true. After I downgrade Beryl to 0.2.0, all problems were gone.

I can confirm this behaviour with a GeForce 5200 graphic adaptor. Sometime an application opens with a black window too. Sometimes be minimising and maximising the window it gets resolved. Reloading the window manager always resolves it.

I can reproduce this phenomena pretty much every time. I have an open Konsole window on the same viewport open. If I now open a new window (new app or a modal window of an existing app like the settings for konqueror) the new window will be totally black (except the decoration which is normal). If I then change to another viewports and back, the newly opened window is normal, but the Konsole terminal is black.

If I uncheck the trailfocus option in the Visual Effects section in the beryl settings manager, the problem does not seem to occur.

Correction... It does occur, but only after 4 more windows are opened, not after the first one.

If I force the rendering platform in Advanced beryl options ->Rendering Platform to "Force AIGLX" this problem seem to not occur anymore.... Therefore my problem seems to be different then the original described one.

Since this seems to be a nvidia-driver bug, shouldn't it be better assigned to that package then to beryl?

Beryl is replaced by Compiz Fusion, so has been removed from Gutsy.
