Bug Description

1) Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex - Alpha amd64 (20080917.1)
    Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid Ibex - Alpha i386 (20080917.1)

2) Alternate install CD default install method.

3) and 4) Installer works fine through first steps, network setup, language setup, partitioning and formatting. The installer stops a good while out in the file copying (Install the base system), giving this message: "Please insert the disc labeled: 'Ubuntu 8.10 _Intredip Ibex_ - Alpha amd64 (20080917.1' in the drive '/cdrom/' and press enter. </br></br> Media change".
When I hit the <Go Back> or <Continue> the same message remains on screen.

The system is intel chipset G45 based and the optical drive is PATA/IDE. See attachment for details.

PS. I've successfully installed the i386 version using an USB stick.

I'm afraid hardware details aren't useful at all here. Instead, what would be useful would be if you could reproduce this bug, then go back until you get to the installer's main menu, select "Save debug logs", extract the syslog file, and attach that to this bug.

Changed in debian-installer:

I understand, the bug is easily reproducible, I ran the installation a
number of times and the same message occurred.
I'm at a loss on how to get back to the main menu. Whatever I press after
the error message is posted, results in a loop back to the same message.
Maybe there is a way by changing console to get the logs you request, but
I'm afraid I would need guidance to do it. My general Linux and CLI skills
are basic at best (but not hopeless;).

It may be of interest that everything ran perfectly when I swapped the IDE
drive with a SATA optical drive.

This probably isn't the most important bug, as few systems with that recent
chipset will sport an older IDE optical drive.

If you wish to look at the logs you requested, feel free to throw me a bone
on how to get at them. I will be happy to oblige if you think it's worth it.

Regards,

Dagfinn

I also think this could be the basis for a real fix by the Ubuntu team.
