I am also experiencing this problem. The UI freezes and banshee uses 100% CPU (in one or more threads since CPU usage goes as high as 150% on my Core 2 Duo). Here is a stack trace and all the errors in the log that came before the crash.

If I activate the MINI Mode Extension, and put banshee to mini mode, it goes back to an (more or less) acceptable 18-20 % cpu load, In full screen mode, it takes up at least 80% of my cpu, even doing nothing.

with the 18-20 % I am doing internet radio listening, so, well, as I said, it's somewhat acceptible, I am suspicious though if it may be related to the display of the buffering, it seams this is updated really quite often, I had such a bug in an application of mine too, long ago, I changed to only do a screen update when the % number changes instead of every time the state changed, made a tremendious difference! So this might be something to checkout, just throwing it out there, without looking at the sources ...

Same issue. I had Banshee minimised to dock, put my hand down beside the laptop to pick up something and the fan was churning hot air at an alarming rate. Killed via system monitor. There seems to be no program combo I use that seems to create any issues (been playing with combos and watching the resources) The only thing I have noticed, is that the amount of processor resources seem to change markedly depending on the bit rate of the file being played (and not in the uniform manner I expected)
At 88 kbps - 8%
At 145 kbps - 8%
At 256 kbps -50%
At 353 kbps - 24%
I can recreate this on multiple files quite easily. Doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. Don't know if it means anything or not.

Can confirm similar symptoms on a Samsung N210Plus with dual-core Atom processor. 150% CPU with freeze on Banshee. No other functions/applications seem to be affected. Banshee can be closed as "normal" by using Force Quit.
