Does Banshee 1.9.2's log also show a bunch of EPIPE stuff? And could you also
check if the package in the daily PPA[1] works?

The previous banshee's (1.9.2) log doesn't have EPIPE stuff, attached log

Using the ppa's 1.9.3, banshee works fine, log about the same as the working 1.9.2 ubuntu version

Reconfirmed here by removing banshee, disabling ppa and re-installing the current natty version - still no go
Seen on 2 machines - 32 & 64 bit installs

More info
I noticed that one diff. between the ppa and ubuntu sources is they have the 'enable the soundmenu' patch applied.
So w/ the current ubuntu natty 1.9.3 package installed opened banshee, went into preferences and disabled the soundmenu option, closed and re-opened banshee

Then banshee works as expected and IS controllable in the sound menu,.
re-enabling the option, closing banshee, then reopening and the bad behavior returns

Also note that while banshee works with the option disabled that when exiting banshee it remains active in the soundmenu and there may also be a potential loss of the global menu for banshee in the unity interface

I have not found that to be repeatable, will leave for new bug if it becomes an issue other than some random or 1 time occurance

Actually, could you enable the soundmenu extension in the daily package and see
if that works?

With the soundmenu enabled in the ppa package same thing. If it's enabled in Edit> preferences then banshee will not play anything and the soundmenu doesn't expand.

Disabling it returns function in banshee and the soundmenu.

So - banshee and the soundmenu work fine as long as it's (show in soundmenu) is Not enabled.

Further - disabling the extension itself doesn't prevent banshee from using the soundmenu either

Sorry about extra posts - wish I could edit.

Just to be clear -
There is the extension - "Sound Menu Integration", and the preferences option "Show Banshee in the sound menu", the option only appears if the ext. is enabled

Whether the extension is enabled or not doesn't affect banshee or it being in and usable in the sound menu

Only the preferences > General > "Show Banshee in the sound menu" , if enabled, will prevent playback and sound menu use, though banshee can be opened directly from sound menu

So it appears the extension may not be needed, though if included and enabled the option to 'show...' must be disabled.

So - taking the next logical step - I've removed the banshee-soundmenu-extension package and banshee works fine, soundmenu and all.
(the package is a recommend

Sorry for not quite understanding the point of the sound menu extension, it appears to be used to allow one to 'minimize' banshee to the soundmenu
so clearly it should be installed and enabled, and disabling the option to show seems to make things ok.

That does however lead to what i mentioned before about the global menu disappearing, have found how to repeat.
(I was testing this for the most part on the Classic > gnome-panel login with global menus disabled.

While a separate bug will mention here.

In the unity login -
open banshee, start track, close with X button. Music continues to play and is controllable from sound menu.
Restore banshee from the soundmenu - the global menu is gone

On the other hand, same as above but instead minimize banshee to launcher, then when restored from soundmenu the global menu is retained.
