Bug Description

Binary package hint: banshee

Banshee freezes shortly after start.
UNABLE TO READ OLD DATABASE AFTER UPGRADE!

Most likely the problem is at import of old banshee.db.
Removing all data from ~/.config/banshee resolves the problem, but there is no way to import old database.

The start with empty config directory is OK, after copying old banshee.db into its old place the symptom gets back.
Vacuuming the database as suspected had also no effect.

It means, that I have to downgrade Ubuntu or at list custom-compile old banshee to get my podcast database back.

Maybe some kind of import/export functionality on banshee upgrade would help.
Rebuilding and or validating the database might also help.

Hi,

Where did you see the message in caps, and from what version of Banshee are you
upgrading to? Also, could you upload the banshee.db for further debugging?

The "message" is not from banshee but from me :)

It was upgrade from Ubuntu 10.04 to 10.10 (beta?).

I could upload the database, but I do not wan to to make this file public.
I would gladly transfer the file to someone who would use it for debugging of the problem and not make the file public.

Let me know whom should I send the file.
It is 55MB large and I have a backup copy of it not touched by the new banshee version.

Thanks,

Paul

In that case, please run "banshee --debug --redirect-log", and when Banshee
hangs, run "killall -SIGQUIT banshee-1", and then "killall -9 banshee-1". Then
upload the ~/.config/banshee-1/log file. It should include a backtrace on where
it's hanging.

Please also check whether Banshee is quietly doing nothing or grinding the CPU
when it hangs.

Thanks.

The attached file contains four logs generated as suggested in #4

Banshee was using at least 100% of one CPU at the moment signals were sent to banshee.

I have build from source 1.6.1, 1.6.0 and 1.5.6 on the 10.10 release. All three versions give me identical behaviour as the 1.7.6 from Ubuntu build.

Paul Ortyl (ortylp) wrote :

I have restored my system from latest backup to get back to 10.04, all files except /home.
Banshee 1.6.1 from 10.04 works, even with the banshee.db, which have been touched by 1.7.6.

Please let me know how can I help you further in resolving this bug.

I have the same probleme. With my old .db file, banshee keeps crashing a few seconds after I start it. The music keeps playing. With a new .db everything works fine.

I created the log file (previous post) as described by #4.
My banshee.db is 18MB. I'm not sure if I can make such big attachments, but I'm happy to provide it if anyone is interested.

running with
banshee --disable-dbus
seems to work without problems

I upgraded to Banshee 1.8.0 which seems to have solved the problem.

Sorry for spamming the board. (Is there an option to edit or delete posts?)

Paul Ortyl (ortylp) wrote :

I tried 1.8.0 (from PPA) yesterday, it works "better" in the sense, that it comes back after a few minuted with feedback, that some RSS feed could not be updated, and after that gets back into 100% CPU unresponsive state.

I thought, that if I start with a fresh DB and add RSS feeds manually (why there is no bulk subscription available?) everything goes well. Sorry, it is still unusable. It looks as if every network access needed at least a minute of 100% CPU time (on T500)... that is a joke.

After trying to use banshee for a few years (since 1.3) I gave up. I managed to export some vital data using sqlitebrowser and import it into gpodder...

ortylp, have you checked if this behaviour is still occurring under banshee 1.9.0.x series?

Sorry, banshee and all related databases/configurations have been purged from my system (see #12)
