Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. Unfortunately a paper cut should be a small usability issue that affects many people and is quick and easy to fix. I'm afraid this bug can't be addressed as part of this project.

Banshee is not part of the default install, Hence not a papercut.
A paper cut is a minor usability annoyance that an average user would encounter on his/her first day of using a new installation of Ubuntu 9.10.

For further info about papercuts criteria , pls read > https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut

Don't worry though, This bug has been marked as "invalid" ONLY in the papercuts project.

mac_v are you sure it's not a papercut? recently you fixed a problem about the alphabetical order of the "open with" dialog", and this bug is really similar to this, because in that dialog there are 2 banshee entries.

This of course would apply if banshee will be selected as the default media player, if not reclose.

Thank you for your bug report. However, what you describe isn't really a bug. The different desktop files are there for handling different mimetypes and launching Banshee in a specific way for those mimetypes. They all have the same name so that you don't see a different name in the Nautilus "Open with->" menu depending on the mimetype of the file. "Open with Banshee Media Player" is the only thing that makes sense to the user in that menu. What else would you suggest?

since the different .desktop files executes differnt actions, each of
them should have a different name (and description).
in particular:
banshee-1-audiocd.desktop should have Name=Banshee Media Player (play audio CD)
while the other .desktop file is OK

don't you think?

So are you confirming that banshee will not replace rhythmbox in karmic?

Chris Coulson (chrisccoulson) wrote :

No, I think that's wrong. If I write click on an audio CD icon in nautilus
to expose the context menu, it should show "Open with Banshee". It shouldn't
show "Open with Banshee (Play audio CD)". The extra information is
irrelevant.

you will see 3 different "Banshee Media Player" entries, each of which
do a different action, and you can't know which action does they
perform if it's not written anywhere

But that is a separate issue with using desktop files for mimetype
association. It's already known, and affects every application on the
desktop.it's not a banshee issue though, and certainly isn't a papercut

Do you mean that they mimetype based desktop entries don't have to be
listed in the open with dialog?
This is in my opinion wrong, because open with should list all
different actions, not only the default one

I'v not confirming anything. Its not yet decided that Banshee is replacing rhythm box. It will be decided only before feature freeze. If Banshee is the default , then you may re-open this bug. The reason , why I have set this as invalid is> for devs to focus on the open ones. There are already more than 1000 bugs reported , but short-handed in devs.

If you know a simple fix for this , Kindly add it here . Then David Siegel will make a final call.

That's not what I said. The "Open with" dialog is only really useful as
a catch-all if a buggy application doesn't identify itself as supporting
a particular mimetype. It already lists every launchable desktop file.
All handlers for a particular mimetype should be listed in the "Open
with->" submenu, and there will be only a single entry for each
application.

With the audio CD case, right clicking on the CD icon should show "Open
with Banshee" in the "Open with->" submenu. Because the particular
mimetype will only appear in one of Banshee's desktop files, then only
one entry will appear here. This is correct already - all the user cares
about here is opening their audio CD with Banshee.

What you're proposing is renaming the desktop files for every single
application to make each separate action identifiable in the "open with"
dialog box. So, in the audio CD case, I would end up with right-clicking
on the CD icon, and navigating to "Open with -> Open with Banshee (Play
audio CD)". That is plain wrong IMO.

If you're having to navigate to the "Open with" dialog on a frequent
basis, then the application that you're using is broken, and should be
fixed to add the additional supported mimetypes to its desktop file.

Chris, Nicolò, can you please provide screenshots demonstrating the effect of this bug? That would make the decision to consider this a paper cut easier to make.
