Bug Description

Unity launcher shows sepparate icons for same program. In my case I have noticed this problem only with Okular when I open different file types (pdf, dvi, ps).

I think that the problem is specific to the .dvi format because if I open just pdfs the windows get grouped fine.

Thank you for your bug report, do you know if okular run different processes for each format it opens?

summary: - Unity launcher shows sepparate icons for same program.
+ Unity launcher shows sepparate icons for same program (okular).

Hi,

if by processes you mean entries in the system monitor, the answer is yes
but it also happens with only one format, it creates an okular process for
each document being viewed.

The difference is that when having .dvi documents it creates another okular
icon on the unity dash. Another thing I noticed is that if I have more than
one dvi file they get grouped just fine, so that I can have a couple of
pdfs and a couple of dvis in two groups (two icons).

Doesn't seem really a bug, okular seems to be doing things in a weird way, bamf could be smarter about it but it's just that okular seems to start different instances for i.e pdf and dvi and use different icons for those which unity reflects

affects: unity → bamf

Okular does not use different icons when you open a pdf and when you open a dvi, what made you think that? Did you even try it before declaring it was weird for doing that?

And not, it's not starting different instances for pdf and dvi, it's just starting a new instance of the same binary for every file you open, be it a different file format or not.

Stephen M. Webb (bregma) wrote :

I believe the problem is not that different icons are being shown for different filetypes, but that multiple instances of the icon for Olular are being displayed in the Unity Launcher because BAMF is reporting these as different applications (not as different instances of the same application).
