Bug Description

Binary package hint: awn-applet-awn-notification-daemon

Running Natty Narwhal (11.04 alpha 3), patched with all updates as of today.

Upon initial install, the notification icons appeared correctly. After one of the automatic updates, the notification icons in my main/personal account become "terminal boxes" (i.e. the default icon for not-found icons). In particular, I have the notification area configured to always display the network and power icons, and these appear always as not-found icons (hence missing the useful information displayed by variations on those icons--wifi strength, power remaining, etc; this also, of course, makes it less obvious which notification icon corresponds to which status). Moreover, when other applications pop up their transient notification icons, they are also these not-found icons rather than specific to the notifying application (at least in the few cases where I've noticed it).

Making this bug a bit stranger, I use the Ubuntu Classic interface when I see this problem. The same thing occurs in the Ubuntu Classic (no effects) login choice. However, if I log in with the Unity interface, the icons appear correctly (however, I do not wish to use Unity in general at this point). I do not like the Ambiance theme, so change it to Clearlooks. However, the problem is the same with whatever theme I choose--I tried toggling through a number of them to verify this. The specific "not-found" icon changes between themes (e.g. under Ambiance it has a red X inside the icon), but it remains the generic rather than app-specific icon.

The 3rd-party notification icon for Dropbox appears correctly, and displays its variants based on Dropbox status (but the problem existed before I intalled Dropbox, so that's not the cause).

Making this even a bit stranger yet, if I log in under a different account rather than my person default one, the notification icons appear correctly, including in the Ubuntu Classic interface. It appears to be only the main account that is "corrupted" this way. Perhaps because that was the account running when an update was performed. Or perhaps after I modified a panel by adding or removing some area that had this side effect. I have experimented with adding and removing the notification area to several panels to see if that might solve the issue, but it remains the same whenever the notification area is placed in any panel.

Thank you for yor bug report. I think it's a duplicate of bug 741385, which affect any notification area, not only the Awn one.
