Bug Description

When using awful.util.spawn() in ~/.config/awesome/rc.lua to automatically start programs on login, awesome crashes and sends the user back to the login manager.
In 12.10, with awesome 3.4.13-1, awful.util.spawn() worked fine. Also, when using awful.util.spawn_with_shell() in 13.04, the problem does not appear. I was able to consistently reproduce this behaviour on multiple machines.

The following error is logged in ~/.xsession-errors:

X Error of failed request: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 12 (X_ConfigureWindow)
Resource id in failed request: 0x0
Serial number of failed request: 951
Current serial number in output stream: 957
