Bug Description

Binary package hint: avidemux

Avidemux x264 encoding in Ubuntu 10.04 is very slow running the same project in 9.10.

I usually edit VOB or mpg files then render to mp4 using the x264 codec with default settings.

Normal speed in 9.10 varies throughout the process from 8 to 10 fps on my AMD Athlon 2500+ PC with 1 gig ram.

In Ubuntu 10.04 this drops down to 2 fps and lower. The average being around 1.2 fps.

I tried 3 or 4 identical projects in Avidemux comparing Ubuntu 10.04 and 9.10. The results were the same - 10.04 rendering at below 2 fps with 9.10 at an average of about 9 fps.

With a dual-core notebook, the situation is somewhat better with 10.04 running at around 7 to 10 fps and 9.10 at around 15 fps (sometimes up to 25 fps).

Is this a difference between the codecs used in 9.10 and 10.04 or is the problem Avidemux?

Thanks

Think I'm having this problem also. x264 encoding ridiculously long - 20x slower than Xvid for example!

you are comparing apples to oranges.

So far, I have resorted to using Ubuntu 9.10 or Linux Mint 8 for X264 encoding with Avidemux. The extreme slowness is still evident in 10.04 or Linux Mint 9.

On my old machines (single-core), X264 encoding is about 1.9 fps or less in 10.04 but about 9 fps in 9.10.

I'm noticing the same bug, and I also have an athlon XP processor. Perhaps this slowness is only noticeable in CPUs without SSE2 support?
