Thanks for the report.

Can you test with the new version in hardy ?
Do you have always this problem or it's just random crash on startup ?
It could be usefull if you can report the crash with apport.

Well, since I've installed kate-kde4, I don't have the probleme, I think
It's a dependency problem with D-Bus because kate-kde4 install a dbus
package ...
If you need more information, tell me
Thanks

Thanks for the test. That's strange, awn depends on libdbus-1-3 and libdbus-glib-1-2, that should provide all dbus necessary stuff. Is there another dbus package installing with kate ?

Well just looking through kate-kde4 deps, it depends on kdelibs5 which pulls down dbus-x11 which depends on dbus itself. But dbus comes with a default Ubuntu install so I can't imagine that this is the issue.

any reason why you need to depends on x11-dbus? why the dbus started by GNOME for example would not be enough?

@Luca
I changed the way python binaries are made by only call pycentral with binary-post-install instead of DEB_PYTHON_SYSTEM=pycentral because it's is more simple and correctly made python depends for binaries (the previous way didn't).

@Sebastien
The problem appears when AWN is installed in a non-GNOME environnement. According to this error :

(avant-window-navigator:11868): WARNING **: Failed to make connection to session bus: Failed to execute dbus-launch to autolaunch D-Bus session

it's seems to need dbus-launch which is part of the dbus-x11 package, but I didn't investigate more on this.

I would be agreed if Recommends packages was installed by default. If I put on recommends, people will install the package, try to launch it, and will have the same bug report as this one, so nothing will be solve. I don't think a "normal" user will automaticly install recommends packages if he has a crash, or start manually dbus. And dbus-x11 is a very small package which only depends on dbus, so the impact is very minor.

As I understand it, Julien (gilir) is currently trying to get a package dependency change accepted.
I've taken the liberty of changing the status and assignment as a result.
(FYI, I'm one of the upstream devs)

Other possible fix is to make sure dbus working before launching, But in this case, this bug should be forwarded.

I think this is a distribution-specific bug - desktops (such as KDE) should start the D-Bus session daemon when the desktop starts. I think it's fair that Awn assumes that D-Bus is already running when it starts up. I'm pretty sure several other D-Bus using programs assume the same thing. Therefore, I'm marking it as Invalid.
