Bug Description

Binary package hint: avahi-daemon

I keep getting messages in the Daemon logs as follows:

avahi-daemon[3007]: Invalid query packet.

These messages have been enhanced in redhat (http://rhn.redhat.com/errata/RHBA-2009-1119.html) by the addition of the IP address in the debug so that further diagnosis can be done. Please can you do this with Ubuntu too ??

cheers
Simon

I'm seeing this in the live boot version of Karmic and the error messages are really unhelpful without some idea of what is causing them. The RedHat enhancement seems like a sane way forward.

I'd really appreciate being able to tell IT where these are coming from. I get one of these about every one or two seconds and it's really annoying.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, I am closing it because the bug has been fixed in the latest development version of Ubuntu - Lucid Lynx.

If you need a fix for the bug in previous versions of Ubuntu, please follow the instructions for "How to request new packages" at https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports#request-new-packages

As a sidenote, the message "Invalid query packet" didn't change. The fix in the latest version of Ubuntu (which should no longer be called a development version) brings the exact same improvements as specified in the document linked in the bug description.

Er, I have avahi-daemon 0.6.25-1ubuntu6 (ie. lucid's) installed and I still see the uninformative error messages:

This makes me wonder whether this bug is as fixed as comment #4 suggests it is. :P

Red Hat also noted the bug back in 5.2 but relegated it to errata, then didn't pick the bug back up.

Debian has a "work around" here.

http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=534622

basically edit a new file

/etc/logcheck/ignore.d.server/avahi-daemon

add this line to the file

^\w{3} [ :0-9]{11} [._[:alnum:]-]+ avahi-daemon\[[0-9]+\]: Invalid query packet.$

save it and make sure that the ownership and permissions match the other files in the dir. Then restart the Avahi Daemon. (restart avahi-daemon) So far it seems to be working here.

That fix does not add the debugging information, it only supresses the error. The Red Hat fix gives an IP address.

This fix is not existent on my Ubuntu 10.04 install. I am seeing these messages just as other commenters are. This bug needs reopening.
