audio plays as white noise

any audio is unplayable in audacity, resulting in white noise.

Now Audacity is completely unusable.

I was able to work around this with Edit -> Preferences -> Devices and choosing actual hardware devices for both Recording and Playback. I had to experiment with which devices to choose, but was able to find a combination that avoided the problem.
