Selecting folders in Places Menu opens Audacious

I installed Audacious on Ubuntu Mate 14.10. Using the default Applications-Places-system menu on the top panel, clicking on Places and choosing any folder in the list does not open it, but instead opens Audacious (if it is not already open) and loads any music files present, and some that aren't music. The chosen folder never opens. It is impossible to access my Desktop, for example, from the Places menu.

This behavior with Ubuntu MATE 14.10 is confirmed on a second computer.

Clicking on Places > Home Folder caused Audacious to open a new tab, then recursively search my home folder, find all music files and create a list for play. Two subfolders contain music files. in addition, it included a database at ~/.config/libreoffice/4/user/database/biblio/biblio.db for some reason (song info for the database shows Title: ƒ p; Artist: (blank entry) Album: (blank entry); Format: ProTracker; Quality: sequenced; Bitrate: N/A

Expected behavior is to open my home folder in the file manager.

I can't reproduce what you describe by simply install Audacious.

However, when Audacious is installed it add a new context menu to Caja to open a folder with Audacious. It is possible you have associated this context as the default open folder action.

I still can't reproduce this but I think I found the problem `/usr/share/applications/audacious.desktop` has MIME-type 'inode/directory'. Someone in #ubuntu-mate IRC channel had the same issue and purging Audacious restored the correct behaviour.

Additional Facts:

I have installed Ubuntu Mate 14.10 on 4 computers and then installed Audacious. I find one of the four is NOT affected by this problem.

On one of the 3 affected computers, I have installed Ubuntu MATE 14.04 in dual boot and find that the problem did not show up in 14.04.

Opening folders with the file manager does NOT produce the problem on any machine, so Audacious would not be the default for opening folders. It is only from the panel Mint Main Menu > Places, or the panel Menu Bar Places Menu that the problem manifests itself.

Only the unaffected computer shows a right-click menu option to "Open With Audacious" The three affected machines lack this entry. That is strange.

As a test, I removed "inode/directory" from the MimeType= line on one affected machine and rebooted. The problem still exists.

"inode/directory" is shown as a MimeType in the unaffected computer as well. If this were the cause, I would expect this one to be affected too.

Thanks for looking into this futher. You say the issue is only present in MATE Menu? Not the Apllications Places System menu? After you edit files in `/usr/share/applications` you need to run `update-desktop-database -q` for the changes to be picked up.

After some more experimentation, I believe I have repaired the problem of

MATE Menu > Places > Home Folder (or Desktop or other location, like another filesystem)

opening the selection in Audacious.

First I note that even on the affected machines, opening a folder in the file manager worked correctly: that is, double click on the folder or opening a folder from right-click menu > Open opened the desired folder in the file manager window.

What I did that fixed the MATE Main Menu behavior: Opened file manager, then using any folder: right click > Open With > Other Application > Caja fixed the problem in the MATE menu > Places described in the first paragraph. (there were two Cajas to choose from: one with a folder symbol, the other with the file cabinet symbol. I selected the latter).

Yes, Audacious seems to be set (or set itself) as the default application for folders after installation, but for some reason that was ONLY in the MATE menu (called Main Menu in the panel items list). Rechoosing Caja in the file manager as described above fixed the MATE menu as well.

Other comments:
This repair corrected the problem, but not the cause.
I discovered that the MATE Advanced Menu was not affected.
I can't explain why one machine of four was not affected.

I have this bug in Ubuntu MATE 14.04.2 (64 bit)

Main Menu > Places > Choose a Location (Desktop, for example), and Audacious opens and loads files in that folder.
