[Maverick] Audacious does not appear in the sound menu in Ubuntu 10.10

Starting Audacious 2.4.0 on Ubuntu 10.10 does not result in an Audacious section to appear in the sound menu.

The Status Icon plugin adds an Audacious icon/menu in the notification area and does not make use of the sound menu. It should be replaced with a plugin that integrates with the sound menu, as recommended on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/NotificationAreaTransition/CompatibilityFixes

I implemented the sound menu registration method in a plugin.

I used libindicate as specified on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoundMenu#Music%20player%20integration

Now I have an Audacious section correctly registered in my sound menu. If I select the Audacious item in the sound menu the player is launched and the playback item is presented in the menu, but clicking the play/previous/next buttons doesn't have any effect.

I am not a developer and I cannot go further in the implementation without some other simple code examples.

Audacious cannot be controlled from the playback item in the sound menu because it doesn't support the latest version of the MPRIS specifications (see bug #681994).

Isn't it better if I make a patch to audacious-plugins instead of uploading a new package for a single plugin?

You could create a patch for audacious-plugins instead. You should forward the patch to the audacious developers and ask them to include your plugin.

i am not certain why we would include this in audacious upstream. are there any distributions other than ubuntu planning on implementing the "sound menu"?

the package does not work on natty 11.04, it even does not load the menu into indicator-sound

Back in December I mailed the indicator-sound developers mailing list about the upcoming changes to the registration process in Natty. This was also announced at UDS in Orlando. The libindicate dependency has been dropped in favour of a simple MPRIS interface watching approach.
The spec on the wiki has been updated at every stage of this move over to help guide developers make the switch also. Do you know if this plugin has been updated to work the Natty way.

I'd like to use audacious (my favourite player) from the sound menu instead of banshee (I don't like it and I don't want to use it) in Ubuntu Natty, but this is the better news that I can found.

why exactly do you want to use the "ubuntu sound menu"? it does not seem to be an essential feature for using audacious and is generally an encroachment of canonical on the desires of upstream projects to follow their wacky UI concepts so odds are unlikely that support will be added for this upstream ever.

but i really do want to know why people think this feature is "important".

I would like to clarify that canonical changed its "ubuntu sound menu" specs in the latest release of ubuntu (https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoundMenu#For%20Natty) so that upstream projects are *not* required anymore to do anything special for ubuntu. I personally think this was the right choice.

what we are asking (see bug #681994) is just to make audacious support the latest major revision of the standard Media Player Remote Interfacing Specification (MPRIS) specification.

this common dbus interface for media players, not related to canonical, is supported by freedesktop.org (http://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Specifications/mpris-interfacing-specification) and is used by different projects in many distributions (for example: mpris-remote, ruby-mpris).

I spent some months on #audacious irc channel trying to implement this by myself and made some patches, but I finally gave up because I did not find enough help to do this with my very limited skills.
