Bug Description

[Problem]
1. Install atari800-jz package from Ubuntu Software.
2. Run Atari800 emulator
3. Press ALT-F so that Atari800 goes full screen
4. Quit emulator - press F9 (or ALT-F again and make it crash-quit)
4. Desktop is stuck emulator resolution and user is unable to do anything about it. Clicking on battery icon will not display Power Off/Log out option due to small resolution. Only option then is to press CTRL+ALT+DEL and log out this way.

[Workarounds]
Have a Settings app running with Display tab selected and placed on top left screen corner. Once emulator quits - change resolution manually.

[Environment]
Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS with all updates installed
Gnome 3.36.8

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that your bug report is not filed about a specific source package though, rather it is just filed against Ubuntu in general. It is important that bug reports be filed about source packages so that people interested in the package can find the bugs about it. You can find some hints about determining what package your bug might be about at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/FindRightPackage. You might also ask for help in the #ubuntu-bugs irc channel on Freenode.

To change the source package that this bug is filed about visit https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1939136/+editstatus and add the package name in the text box next to the word Package.

With no response to comment #2 this issue is going nowhere.
Re-tasking to gnome-shell which will attract the attention of the Desktop Team.

Sadly I don't think this is a bug in Ubuntu...

Assuming you're using Xorg, the emulator is talking directly to Xorg (via Xrandr) to change the screen resolution. Gnome Shell is not involved at all. It is therefore the job of the emulator to restore the original resolution on exit.

While the screenshot shows that GNOME is aware of the current resolution being different to the configured resolution, it cannot guess as to which app has caused the change and when is the right time to change back. It's the responsibility of the application (atari800-jz) to clean up after itself.

affects: gnome-shell (Ubuntu) → ubuntu
