I can confirm this in firefox and gedit, I do not use pidgin or tomboy though. I am using an up to date Ubuntu 8.10 install, Firefox 3.0.4, and gedit 2.24.2 |

Added the Aspell package, as this is what gedit uses for spell checking through libenchant1c2a |
