Bug Description

Binary package hint: arts

Hello,
when starting the soundserver in kde3.5.5 on edgy the system hangs for some seconds (~20), then I get "Sound server fatal error: cpu overload, aborting".

This problem didn't occur with kde3.5.5 on dapper. I tested edgy with the 2.6.15-27-k7 Kernel (which with it worked in dapper), but the problem is still there.

The error does not occur, when choosing OSS instead of (automatic selection or alsa) in kcontrol->sound-system->hardware->choose audio hardware.

So maybe this is in the end alsa and not artsd related?

best regards,
raph

I have a desktop, suffering the same problem, and an HP nx6110 notebook, which has no problem. I've tested both using with the Kubuntu 6.10 final live-cd.

Maybe a duplicate of bug 68659?

Yes, I think it is the same.

Though, the sound is fully working for me (after only minimizing the messagebox).

I also think it's the same. At least the bugfix/workaround "options snd-via82xx dxs_support=2" does work for me (the initial bug reporter).

Many thanks to Daniel T Chen (see https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/linux-source-2.6.17/+bug/68659)!

echo "options snd-via82xx dxs_support=2" |sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

and a reboot solves!! the problem. Thanks Daniel! And thanks to Stefan Fleiter for pointing the duplicate.

Same to me.

Using Kubuntu Desktop, upgraded from Ubuntu 6.06 to Ubuntu 6.10 via "update-manager -c".

Whenever a KDE application calls aRTS (if I am in another Window Manager) or during aRTS startup (when I'm entering KDE) the system hangs for a few minutes. After that a message box appears saying "Sound Server Fatal Error / CPU Overload - aborting" and an OK button.

If I leave the message box alone I can use the system. If I click "OK" the system hangs again and, a few minutes later, the message box reappears.

Seems like there's something wrong with aRTS or libarts. This didn't happen prior to upgrading from 6.06 to 6.10.

I also noted that the libarts-ausiofile and the kdemultimedia packages weren't upgraded from 3.5.2 to 3.5.5 due to some dependencies not met. apt-get complains about the lack of various "-dev" packages that kdemultimedia and libarts-audiofile depend upon.

I tried to uninstall kdemultimedia (wich is only a metapackage, so no problem) and libarts-audiofile to see if the aRTS-hanging problem went away. The problem, unfortunately, persists, but now I can't reinstall libarts-audiofile due to those dependency problems.

I'll try to add the options in modprobe.d to see if it also solve the problem here...
