aptitude hangs after updating the package list

Bug #1635179 reported by bp on 2016-10-20
This bug affects 3 people
Affects Status Importance Assigned to Milestone
aptitude (Ubuntu)

Bug Description

This is pretty much the same bug as https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=838560, except no -u flag is necessary.

1. Open aptitude
2. Attempt to update the package list with 'u'
3. One of the requests 404s
4. Aptitude hangs at "loading cache", no progress bar is shown on screen

Removing the offending entries from the sources list means Aptitude no longer hangs.

To anyone affected by this issue,

We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to review all reported bugs in a timely manner. You reported this bug some time ago and there have been many changes in Ubuntu since that time.

Ubuntu 16.10 (yakkety) reached end-of-life on July 20, 2017.

Do you still see a problem related to the one that you reported in a currently supported version of Ubuntu?

See this document for currently supported Ubuntu releases:

Please let us know if you do otherwise this bug report can be left to expire in approximately 60 days time.

Thank you for helping make Ubuntu better.
