update-manager crashed with Package [u'nspluginviewer'] isn't available in _run()

A package which is only available on i386 is upgradable and shows up correctly in update-manager. When I attempt the upgrade, it fails because the package 'nspluginviewer' isn't available - this is accurate, the package is 'nspluginviewer:i386'.
