software-center crashed with ValueError in _parse_localename()

seems to be crashing with the en_AG locale

Wow, that seemed to be the problem indeed. I changed it to en_US and downloaded some updates and it started working, but since you mentioned the locale, it makes sense that it started working. There were a few other bugs I was experiencing that seemed to have disappeared after changing my locale.
