Bug Description

Binary package hint: update-manager

[ NOTE: This now affects Natty 11.04 Beta-1 as of 2010-12-21 ]

While trying to update this system a few minutes ago, Update Manager showed a list of updates, and then shortly after I clicked on the button for starting the downloads, the program froze after displaying a message saying that the "deamon died".

I then tried running update-manager again. Both this time and the previous time I noticed that the program requested authentication twice, which is odd.

After clicking on "Install Updates", a message popped up 'Waiting for other tasks', presumably the dead daemon.

This is now happening on 11.04 beta-1, updated as of today, on my Averatec 3280 laptop.

Some version information:

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu natty (development branch)
Release: 11.04
Codename: natty
Linux cupid 2.6.37-10-generic #24-Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 16 17:52:40 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

$ apt-show-versions update-manager
update-manager/natty uptodate 1:0.145.10

I had this happen twice since last night. On running Update Manager, the program displayed a list of packages which had been updated (equivalent to 'apt-get update'). When I clicked on the install button, there was a long delay, and finally a dialog popped up telling me that "the daemon has died". After that, I was able to run "apt-get dist-upgrade" to complete the upgrade. I have been updating 11.04 almost daily since the beta-1 release.

Regarding comment #9: Yes.
Regarding comment #10: I'll do that next time I run update-manager.

I tried #10 - here is the last part of the output. There were 2 packages to update, and I clicked on the install button. After a few minutes, the program just froze up, and I used the Gnome tool for removing a frozen app to close it.

I repeated the experiment a few minutes ago - this time redirecting output as follows:

aptd -td 2> apd.log

I started this about 15:04.

I then ran update-manager at about 15:06. There were a number of packages (I think 9) to be installed. Then, around 15:12, I clicked on the install button.

The application seemed to freeze up again. Finally, around 15:17, I tried to close update-manager. The program would not close, so again I used the Gnome "Force Quit" applet to close update-manager. This seems to be shown in the log file as

15:17:04 AptDaemon.Trans [DEBUG]: Removing transaction

I then used "apt-get dist-upgrade" to install the programs. "aptd -d" was still running, but there was no output to the log file due to this run of apt-get.

I then exited from aptd. I have attached the stderr output of aptd.
