Thanks for your bugreport.

What happens if you run:
$ sudo aptd --debug

affects: update-manager (Ubuntu) → aptdaemon (Ubuntu)

I got the same error in the update manager while entering the password (to be more exact while hitting the backspace button to correct my input). The "password window" then disappeared but the "Update Manager" window is still opened and disabled!

For me the output of the requested command is different (immediately after the crash only the lines before "Checking for inactivity" where printed):

$ sudo aptd --debug

This is very annoying defect - it disables the automatic updates for me, I had to perform the update manualy using terminal and apt-get.

Does the rsyslog also run? Run in a terminal: "ps ax | grep rsyslog" or use the system monitor in System -> Administration

Most certainly:

$ ps -ef | grep rsyslog
syslog 1390 1 0 Sep30 ? 00:00:01 rsyslogd -c4
root 1391 1 0 Sep30 ? 00:00:00 dd if=/proc/kmsg of=/var/run/rsyslog/kmsg

Not on demand, no.

There have been so many errors lately, I can't really remember.

Oh, well, I was just trying to update my Karmic installation with the
previous day's updates.

I manually started update manager; it asked me my password and nothing appened; downloading windows don't appears, only a small window saying something like "waiting others applications" (in Italian), details being grayed; when I attempt to hit "close" btn the app crashed; downloading continued even with this crash, and successfully completed and upgraded; I asked for restart; I answered "not now"; after a while updfate manager appaired again, with an erro messaga saying "process died".

I get the same behaviour as in #20.

The update manager lists all updates and when I click "Install" I get a window that only says "Wating for other tasks". But the update is done in the background.

Both windows stays open forever, and when I try to close the main window (no close button on the "Wating..." window) I get a crash similar to this bug report. But the windows stay open and if I try to close them again I get the same crash, over and over again.

rsyslog and ubuntu-minimal is installed. rsyslog is running.
